Vintage Postcard Netsuke – Minkoku Master
This Vintage Postcard Netsuke showcases the work of Minkoku, also known as Genryosai, a renowned sculptor from Edo. Depicting Dzo and Uba, a symbol of family harmony, this netsuke, crafted from wood, stands at 3.9 cm tall. The postcard, published by Fine Arts Publishing House in Moscow in 1983, measures 15 x 10.7 cm (5 7/8″ x 4 3/16″).
Minkoku, possibly a pupil of Shungetsu I, is famous for his wooden sculptures that convey emotional tension. His netsuke often features mythological characters from the ancient Japanese religion, Shinto. Dzo and Uba, popular figures in Shinto mythology, are central to his work. In ancient Japan, weddings followed the Shinto rite, with celebrations featuring a special stand (shimodai) adorned with plum and pine branches symbolizing faithful friendship and life’s steadfastness. Additionally, figures representing benevolent meanings, including Dzo and Uba, were displayed.
In this netsuke, Minkoku depicts a tall, old man in a traditional jacket (haori) and trousers (hakama) holding a rake. Beside him stands a thin old woman in a kimono with long, loose hair tied up in a hoop, holding a broom. At their feet, a tailed turtle symbolizes long life. The old couple’s wrinkled faces display kind smiles, reflecting their hard-working life together. Their soulful closeness, mutual kindness, and shared hardships have given them an elusive resemblance.
