Introduction to Vintage PostCard Netsuke – MASTER HIKAKAKU

This exquisite Vintage PostCard Netsuke showcases Master Hikakaku’s depiction of actors from the 18th century. Crafted from ivory with meticulous carving and engraving, this netsuke stands 4.9 cm tall and originates from the State Museum of Asian Art. The accompanying postcard measures 15 x 10.7 cm (5 7/8″ x 4 3/16″) and was published by the Fine Arts Publishing House in Moscow in 1983.

Artistic Influence and Style

Master Hikakaku, a student of Master Ikkosai, resided and worked in Edo. His works are rare and distinguished by their attention to expressive details and occasional light toning. His signature, “Flying Crane,” adds a unique touch to his creations. This netsuke focuses on actors, a prevalent theme influenced by the prominent role of theater in Edo-period Japan. Japanese art of this era frequently drew inspiration from theater, portraying characters from Noh or Kabuki, as well as actors and puppeteers.

Depiction of Actors in Netsuke

In this netsuke, Hikakaku captures traveling actors often seen in pairs during New Year celebrations. These performers would visit homes, cheerfully wishing “Senshin mandzai” (a wish for ten thousand years), and occasionally staging pantomimes or skits. The host (mandzai) holds a fan, while his assistant (saizo) beats a small drum (sujimi). Their lively expressions and festive attire imbue the scene with charm. The rhythmic movements and compact form of these figures merge seamlessly into a cohesive portrayal.

Conclusion

This netsuke, portraying festive actors, epitomizes Edo-period theater and artistic expression. Collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese art will find Master Hikakaku’s work a delightful addition to their collections. For additional photos or inquiries, please don’t hesitate to contact us. This netsuke beautifully blends everyday life with artistic finesse in Japanese miniature art.
