Description

Vintage PostCard Netsuke – Shoiki Demon Slayer by Master Hokei

Introduction

This unique Vintage PostCard Netsuke features Shoiki, the demon slayer, crafted by the talented Master Hokei. Made from a walnut shell and intricately carved, this netsuke stands at 5.8 cm tall. The postcard itself measures 15 x 10.7 cm (5 7/8″ x 4 3/16″) and was published by the Fine Arts Publishing House in Moscow in 1983.

Historical Background

In late 18th to early 19th century Japan, a favorite subject for sculptors was Shoiki, a legendary Chinese character known as the vanquisher of demons. According to legend, Shoiki failed his exams for an official position, leading him to take his own life out of shame. Consequently, he turned into a demon. However, Shoiki redeemed himself by saving Emperor Xuanzong from a tormenting devil. This act of heroism attributed special magical powers to Shoiki in Japan.

Symbolism and Craftsmanship

Japanese culture regarded netsuke featuring Shoiki as amulets against evil. Master Hokei’s work stands out for its sense of humor. He depicts the struggle between the majestic, formidable Shoiki and a small, annoying devil in a comical light. Shoiki’s massive figure, with tense muscles, contrasts sharply with the small, light, and fidgety demon, creating a dynamic and engaging scene.

Artistic Details

Master Hokei’s portrayal of Shoiki is both powerful and humorous. The demon slayer’s imposing presence is emphasized by his massive figure and tense muscles, while the demon is small and hidden under a shield. The intricate carving of the walnut shell adds to the netsuke’s charm and detail, making it a remarkable piece of miniature art.

Conclusion

Collectors of Japanese art and those interested in cultural heritage will find this Shoiki Demon Slayer netsuke by Master Hokei an invaluable addition.
