The Green Frog Compotier is made from creamware, also known as Queen’s ware, perfected by Wedgwood. It measures 31.5 cm in length and 18 cm in width. Commissioned by Catherine II, the service was designed for the Chesme Palace, built near St. Petersburg’s Frog Swamp.
Each piece of the Green Frog Service boasts painted scenes from Great Britain. The compotier, with its depiction of St. James’s Palace, exemplifies the service’s detailed artistry. Originally comprising 952 pieces adorned with 1,244 views of England, Wales, and Scotland, 770 pieces remain today.
The Green Frog Service is not only artistically significant but also serves as a historical document. It captures landscapes and architecture that have either vanished or changed significantly. The pieces depict scenes from parks, country houses, ancient ruins, and early industrial centers, with many landscapes derived from both contemporary and older prints.
Before being shipped to Russia in 1774, the service was publicly exhibited in London. It was housed in the Chesme Palace until 1830, later moving to the English Palace at Peterhof.
