This Green Frog Service Dish was created in 1773-74 by Josiah Wedgwood. It showcases his decorative art mastery. The dish is part of a service ordered by Catherine II.
Catherine II ordered a large dinner and dessert service from Wedgwood. He crafted this dish from creamware, which he perfected. Known as Queen’s ware, the service was for a palace built by Yuri Velten near Kekerekeksi, later named Chesme Palace. Each piece features painted scenes of Great Britain and bears a green frog crest, giving the service its name.
The service was intended for fifty people. It originally had 952 pieces adorned with 1,244 views of England, Wales, and Scotland. Today, 770 pieces of twenty-eight shapes have survived.
This Green Frog Service Dish stands out for its artistic merits and historical value. Many depicted buildings and landscapes no longer exist or have changed. The pieces also show early industrial centres of England. Nearly one hundred views feature landmarks of London and the Thames. Some landscapes were drawn from nature, while prints served as the major source. Artists copied these prints with great precision, often interpreting them in their own pictorial manner.
Before shipping to Russia in 1774, the service was exhibited in London. It stayed in Chesme Palace until 1830, then moved to the English Palace at Peterhof. Since 1910, the Hermitage Museum has housed it. For more on the Green Frog Service, visit our collection page.
