The hero of this book was already proclaimed great during his lifetime. For more than 20 years Alexei Semyonovich Yakovlev reigned on the St. Petersburg stage of the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries. For the first time he brought to the Russian stage Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Othello, Schillerovskogo Karl Moora, played in the tragedies of Sumarokov, Knyazhnin, Ozerov, Voltaire, Racine. The highest point of his creative rise was the time of the Patriotic War of 1812, when he carried on his shoulders the entire patriotic repertoire. Both creative and personal life of Yakovlev passed before contemporaries as the life of a romantic hero. The book is written in the genre of documentary and artistic biographies, with extensive use of the material found for the first time in the archives.
